Prescription food is the worst for pets. Vets (and doctors) get almost zero training on nutrition--they know nothing about it. You have to do research or just read the labels. The info regarding lack of nutrition in commercial pet food has been available for at least the past twenty years. There are a few vets who take the time to educate themselves. For the past 10 years most vets suggest no dry food for cats or dogs. I totally get that some animals are fat because of poor diet or lack of exercise and the owner is totally at fault there but don't forget that some (a lot) of pets have ways of sneaking food. Even if you control their portions they can still get into things or eat another animals food (if you have multiple pets) so some of you need to chill okay. Exactly! I know some people who just don't take care of their animals at all so I'm not being naive. But I have a Labrador and even though she would go for walks everyday and only eat the best food (no dinner scraps either) she's still a fat dog. Skinny butt but just this big round belly. She's a healthy weight but that's her build so I hate when people call "animal abuse!" When they don't know. Well yeah if they want to keep it healthy. You're kind of proving my point though.

You can't blame owners all the time for the pet's size. So if they adopted a fat cat then yes they should help it but no it wasn't their doing in the first place.
