As with all animals when they know it’s their time they abandon the herd to go off and die alone. That’s if they are sick or elderly. Those killed by man or lion have been documented with pictures and writings. This video has been shortened. The baby's herd was trying for a long long long time to get him out, the mom was in panic and the herd was starting to give up when the other family came to help. I think everyone was emotionally and physically exhausted and had run out of ideas. Possibly the whole herd were in a panic, especially the mother. But the Matriarch of the other herd was a lot bigger, and smart. She looked like she knew exactly what she was doing. Protecting the Elephant In A World Where You Can Be Anything Be Kind Tee.Panicking, she would have hurt her baby and been attacked as well, and her herd would have felt (through the ground) serious help was on the way. They did exactly the right thing. Think a trapped human child, move mother out the way whilst strangers carry out the rescue. I had the same question in my mind when I saw the video. Some of the answers seem convincing but not 100%.

I think that maybe the mother tried effortlessly for some time to rescue the baby (and that was not in the video) and then the herd decided to leave her out of this in order to use one more elephant in a conflight with the lions. Strange decision, but that could be the case. In my mind if the mother couldn't do the job it would be logical for some other herd member to try to do it. Probably younger and inexperienced. Kinda like another video when the baby was trapped in the muddy water and the mom didn't know what to do and accidentally made things worse so the older matriarch literally shoved her out of the way and did it herself lol. Yes, that makes sense with humans as well. When a parent is that panicked and losing it, they should stand aside and let others use their focus to do the work. Mary Mckenzie their is a pecking order in a family unit, the matriarch is head of the herd, she will always come forward first, the actual mother is always too distraught to be any good. So the queen elephant will come from wherever she was to save a baby. Female elephants have huge herds, sometimes 20, small babies, and larger young ones they are all with their mothers. Typically in times like this the herd will push mom away because in her state of panic she’s more likely to hurt than baby than help it.
They do the same thing when needed right after birth. My guess is the mother and her herd were mostly young. Mom was panicking and may have hurt her own baby. They may also have been a PART of this herd and were just a little bit away and herd the commotion.
